An Analysis of Rhetorical Structures of Introduction Sections in International Conference Papers

Producing a well-organized and coherent text remains significant problem in EFL context writing. Cognitive demands low exposure to the language contribute this issue. Numerous researches are available tackle learners’ texts by using various ways such as Theme/Rheme thematic progression. Some studies attempt uncover texts’ coherence rhetorical moves structure. This study attempted novel method reveal called Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST) Mann Thompson (1988). The data were introduction sections of ten articles taken from International Conference on Science, Education, Technology (ISET) 2019, they analyzed considering 23 relations RST. findings that Subject Matter category overpowers number Presentational relations. Elaboration ranks at top with 72 data, followed Background (19 times) Purpose (18 times). However, there is no datum for Volitional Result, Otherwise, Interpretation, Sequence It suggests article writers preferred provide information giving detailed explanation, background case, purposes. results expected encourage future researchers utilize tackling an alternative analyzing educators.
